Lifesystems Fire Steel is a lightweight and compact fire steel for camping, hiking and other outdoor activities. The ferrocerium rod creates sparks with a temperature of up to 2,980°C and can be used to ignite dry tinder, fire lighters and some outdoor stoves.

The fire steel works without fuel, batteries or electricity and can create sparks in all weather conditions and at high altitudes. The Lite version weighs only 27 grams and is easy to store in your backpack, first aid kit or survival kit.

Up to 3,500 sparks

The ferrocerium rod is designed for approximately 3,500 strokes. The included stainless steel striker is scraped along the rod to create a concentrated jet of hot sparks.

Unlike a regular lighter, the fire steel does not rely on gas or batteries, making it a handy backup tool for longer trips and in situations where other ignition equipment may stop working.

Fire steel creates sparks even in damp and cold conditions, but the material to be ignited needs to be sufficiently dry and flammable.

How to use the fire steel

First, prepare dry, finely ground tinder and place it in a safe place. Hold the ferrocerium rod close to the material and pull the striker firmly along the rod so that the sparks are directed towards the tinder.

When first used, the protective coating of the stick may need to be scraped off before strong sparks are produced. Once the tinder has ignited, carefully build up with thin twigs and then coarser wood.

Safe use

Only use the fire steel where fires are permitted and always check for current fire bans. Have water or other extinguishing equipment available and never leave a fire unattended.

Sparks are very hot. Direct them away from your body, clothing, tent fabric, dry vegetation and fuel containers. Extinguish the fire completely after use and store the fire steel out of the reach of children.
