Hilleberg history

Hilleberg was founded in 1971 by Bo Hilleberg , a Swedish forestry engineer and passionate outdoorsman. The idea behind the company was born from a simple but revolutionary thought:
The outer tent and inner tent should be able to be erected at the same time – something that was not available on the market at the time.

Bo worked with his wife Renate Hilleberg , a skilled seamstress who sewed the first prototypes. The combination of Bo's technical ideas and Renate's craftsmanship laid the foundation for the company's philosophy:
Tents should be strong, lightweight, easy to use and completely reliable – regardless of the conditions.

1970–1980: The breakthrough

The first tent from Hilleberg was called Keron – a model that is still used by expeditions and professional adventurers today.

During this time, Hilleberg also launched:

The tunnel construction that became their signature

Kerlon fabric , known for extreme durability and low weight

Here, Hilleberg began to establish itself as a premium tent for mountain environments and tough conditions.

1990s: Expansion and innovation

The company grew internationally and began to divide into clear tent categories, with Black Label , Red Label and later Yellow Label making it easier for users to find the right tent for their needs.

Hilleberg quickly became the obvious choice for:

Mountain hiker

Polar and desert expeditions

Military and government agencies

Professional adventurers

The reputation for their reliability led tent users to start referring to Hilleberg as "the Volvo of tents – but even more bombproof" .

2000s: A global family business

When daughter Petra Hilleberg took over as CEO in the US expansion, Hilleberg's position in the North American market was further strengthened.

Production was gradually moved to the company's own factory in Estonia, where Hilleberg has full control over quality.
Each tent is checked by hand before being packed – one of the secrets behind the company's reputation.

During this period, Hilleberg launched, among other things:

Anjan (lightweight for snow-free seasons)

Nallo and Akto became modern outdoor classics

Expanded Blue Label series for special applications

Today: One of the world's most respected tent companies

Hilleberg is today one of the world's most respected tent brands and is used by:

Expedition leader

Adventurer in Svalbard, Greenland, Sahara and Everest

Military and emergency services

Hikers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide

Despite international success, Hilleberg is still a Swedish family-owned company where quality and reliability always come before mass production.
