Why is it important to wash and proof your outdoor clothing?

Regular washing and impregnation are essential for your outdoor and outdoor products to maintain their functions. If you do not take care of the garments, for example, shell jackets will lose their water-repellent properties, and down jackets or down sleeping bags will lose their insulating effect. With the right care, the equipment will last longer, perform better and feel both fresher and more comfortable to use.

What should you consider when washing your shell clothing?

1. Always use a functional detergent

A functional detergent is a liquid detergent that does not leave residues in the fabric and that cleans gently without negatively affecting the membrane. Regular detergents can clog the pores in the fabric and impair breathability.

2. Wash before impregnation

For the impregnation to adhere properly, the garment needs to be completely clean. A clean product allows the membrane to regain its full function and also increases the lifespan of the garment significantly.

3. Avoid wear and tear in high-traffic areas

Dirt, sweat and salt break down membranes over time, especially in areas such as:

Regular washing reduces the risk of the membrane starting to “crumble” in these zones.

4. The garment becomes more flexible

A clean shell garment feels softer, more flexible and less stiff – which makes it both more comfortable and more functional.

5. The right temperature

Most shell garments feel best washed at 30°C, either on a normal program or an outdoor/sports program if your washing machine has it.
