Why is it important to wash and waterproof your outdoor clothing?

In order for your outdoor products to maintain their functionality, regular washing and impregnation are essential. If you do not take care of your garments, for example, shell jackets will lose their water-repellent properties , and down jackets or down sleeping bags will lose their insulating effect . What should you consider when washing your shell clothes?

1. Always use a functional detergent

Functional detergent is a liquid detergent that does not leave residues in the fabric and cleans gently without negatively affecting the membrane. Regular detergents can clog the pores in the fabric and reduce breathability.

2. Wash before impregnating

For the impregnation to adhere properly, the garment needs to be completely clean. A clean product allows the membrane to regain its full function and also significantly increases the lifespan of the garment.

3. Avoid wear in stressed areas

Dirt, sweat and salt break down membranes over time, especially in areas such as:

• The hood

• Shoulders

• Back part

Regular washing reduces the risk of the membrane starting to “crumble” in these zones.

4. The garment becomes smoother

A pure shell garment feels softer, more flexible and less stiff – making it both more comfortable and more functional.

5. The right temperature

Most shell clothing does best when washed at 30°C , either on a normal program or an outdoor/sports program if your washing machine has one.
