Ice safety equipment

Ice safety – the knowledge and equipment that makes the trip safe on natural ice

Being on natural ice requires respect, preparation and the right equipment. Ice can change quickly with weather, wind and flowing water – which is why ice safety is one of the most important parts of cross-country skating, winter running, ski touring or other activities on frozen lakes and oceans.

With us you will find both equipment and knowledge to help you move safely on the ice. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced ice walker, the goal is the same: that you come home as healthy and happy as when you set out.

Why is ice safety so important?

Naturis is never completely safe – it must be constantly assessed and tested.
The right equipment and knowledge will help you to:

  • read the quality and thickness of the ice

  • discover weak spots before you fall into them

  • avoid flowing water and danger zones

  • to cope with a possible robbery

  • help others if an accident occurs

  • make better decisions throughout the trip

Ice safety is not about "daring more", but about knowing more .

Basic ice safety equipment – what you should always have with you

When moving on natural ice, you should always have with you:

🔹 Ice spikes

The most important tool if you fall in.
Helps you get out of bed quickly and safely.

🔹 Throwing line

Necessary to be able to help others – or be saved yourself.

🔹 Backpack with waterproof stuff sack

Works as a buoyancy aid if you are splashing and keeps extra clothes dry.

🔹 Ice spike / ice stick

Your main safety insurance. Test the ice in front of you continuously.

🔹 First aid kit

For cuts, frostbite and minor injuries.

🔹 Extra clothes in a sealed bag

Dry, warm clothes are crucial after a spill.

🔹 Mobile phone in waterproof case

To be able to call for help – even in freezing temperatures.

We offer all of this in our range, selected for maximum reliability in real winter conditions.

Learn to read the ice – knowledge is your best security

The strength of ice is affected by:

  • temperature

  • wind

  • flowing water

  • snow cover

  • solar radiation

  • time of season

Some basic rules:
✔ Clear core ice is the strongest
✔ White ice/snow ice is significantly weaker
✔ Ice near capes, straits and reefs is always unsafe
✔ Currents make the ice unpredictable
✔ Be extra careful at the beginning and end of the season

Plurking – how to reduce risks

A plurring can be harmless if you are prepared.
The most important points:

  1. Keep calm

  2. Use the ice spikes to get up where the ice is strongest

  3. Sit on the backpack for buoyancy

  4. Crawl back towards safe ice

  5. Change into dry clothes immediately

  6. Drink something hot and warm up

With the right equipment and knowledge, things often go very well – but only if you are prepared.

Never go alone

The most important rule of all.
Ride or hike with at least two people , preferably more.
This makes rescue possible – in both directions.
