Start with the binding, the ride and your foot
The right ski touring boot should fit the binding, hold the foot comfortably in place and provide a good combination of warmth and freedom of movement. The guide is about boots for Nordic ski touring with a free heel, for example forest and mountain tours.
- Check the system: which binding is on your skis, or which system should you buy?
- Describe the terrain: mostly flat, hilly or very downhill?
- Calculate the time: a few hours, a whole day or several days in a row?
- Assess the conditions: active spring trip, cold winter day or trip with many breaks?
- Start from the foot: length, width, ankle, heel and planned socks.
Then compare our touring ski boots based on these needs. If you are buying everything from the beginning , skis , bindings and boots need to be chosen as a functioning whole.
Binding system: NNN BC, Xplore and 75 mm

Read the system designation in the product information and check the current model. Do not rely solely on the word "BC", the brand name or the fact that the ski boot looks similar to your old one. The same ski boot family can be found with different soles.
NNN BC is not ordinary NNN
Cross-country ski boots for regular NNN, Prolink or Turnamic will not fit in an NNN BC binding. The attachment and sole are different. A warm cross-country ski boot is therefore not automatically right for a touring ski binding.
Xplore has its own attachment
Xplore uses a special system with SpringPin in the sole of the ski boot. Rottefella's system information indicates which ski boots each binding is intended for. The side attachments should not be confused with the tech system of alpine touring bindings.
75 mm requires checking the exact combination
75 mm describes a type of sole nose. Also check the thickness, construction and whether the boot can be used with three pins or requires a certain cable binding. There are 75 mm boots where the manufacturer advises against three-pin attachment.
The binding can also limit which soles it works with. NTN is a different system than 75 mm. Please send pictures and model names if you are unsure about older equipment.

The categories overlap. A ski boot can work for both day trips and longer mountain hikes, but you need to decide which feature is most important to you. The binding system itself does not determine how warm, wide or stiff the ski boot is.
A beginner doesn't automatically need the softest boot, and an experienced skier doesn't need the stiffest. Choose based on terrain, skis, pack size, and the balance of freedom of movement and control you're comfortable with.
Fit and size: toe space with a good heel grip

Measure both feet and follow the model's size guide.
Measure both feet and use the larger one. Check if the size guide states foot length, inseam, or a measurement that already includes room for movement. Don't add extra centimeters twice.
Manufacturers' advice may differ between designs. For example, shell boots have specific space and sock guidelines, so don't use a general rule that all touring ski boots should be one or two sizes larger than your everyday shoes.
Width and height are different things
A wide forefoot, high instep and narrow heel can occur in the same foot. This requires space in front and above the instep while keeping the heel stable. Choosing a longer ski boot does not always solve a last that is too narrow.
A roomy winter boot should still provide control. If the entire foot slides, pushing off and steering will be more difficult. The leather may deform slightly with use, but obvious pinching or incorrect sole shape should not need to be “gone”.
Try the whole combination
Bring your ski socks and any inserts you want to use. Try on the right liner if the model has one. Extra thick socks or insoles take up space and can change both toe space and heel grip.
Support and flexibility: three qualities to look for
Forward bending for the step
On long, flat trails, the boot needs to perform in a repeated walking and skiing stride. Feel how it flexes during push-off and whether the upper is pressing over your toes or ankle. More resistance forward is not always more comfortable during a long day.
Torsional stiffness for ski control
Torsional stiffness is how much the sole twists when you try to steer or edge the ski. A more torsionally stiff construction can provide clearer control in hilly terrain. Evaluate it along with the width of the ski, the binding and how the foot fits.
Support around the ankle and shaft
Shaft, reinforcements, straps and cuff affect lateral support. Try bending your knees and shifting your weight to the sides. A high shaft does not automatically provide good support if the boot is also too roomy around the foot.
Manufacturers’ guides for alpine ski boots also differentiate between insulation, fit, sole stiffness and ankle support. Compare the features individually instead of letting the word “stable” describe everything.
The flex resistance of the binding also affects the feel. Some systems have replaceable flex parts. They can adjust the resistance of the binding but are not a substitute for a ski boot that fits your foot and use.
Heat: insulation, space and dry layers
Warmth depends on more than just the amount of lining. The insulation of the ski boot, the space around the foot, the socks, and how moist the layers become all interact. An active tour in mild weather has different requirements than slow skiing with many stops in the cold.
Thicker socks require space
Try one or two socks based on the construction of the ski boot and the manufacturer's advice. A thin inner sock and a warmer outer sock can work in a roomy model. If the combination makes the ski boot tight, you need to change the layout.
Lace up so that the foot is held in place without squeezing it. If your toes start to feel pinched or numb, the fit and lacing need to be reviewed. More layers are not a good solution if they take away the space your foot needs.
Also plan for breaks
Consider how much you will be moving, standing still, and being in wind or moisture. Evaluate any temperature rating together with the manufacturer's conditions and your own experience. It is not a personal guarantee of warm feet.
Moisture becomes more important as the tour continues the next day
On multi-day trips, you need a routine for airing out and drying out damp items. Bring spare dry socks and plan where insoles or inner boots can dry. Try the routine on a shorter trip before building your entire winter trip around it.
Solid lining, removable inner shoe and shell construction

A removable liner is the entire soft shoe that surrounds the foot inside the boot. A removable insole is just the sole under the foot. The difference is important when comparing options for drying, spare parts, and replacing worn parts.
A separate liner can be handy when you want to dry the lining without heating the entire boot. At the same time, check how well the liner fits inside the outer part. A loose or incorrect liner can impair the fit.
Among felt liners, soles and shoelaces there are accessories for different constructions. Check the model and size before purchasing. A thicker liner is not automatically a suitable upgrade.
Materials and weather protection: leather, textile, membrane and rubber
Leather and textile
Leather can provide a sturdy upper that will mold somewhat with use and require custom care. Textiles and synthetics are often used to combine flexibility, reinforcement, and weight. Consider the entire construction and exposed seams, not just the material name.
Membrane and moisture from outside
A waterproof membrane can protect against moisture penetrating through the upper. It does not prevent snow or water from entering through the opening, and the ski boot can still become damp from sweat. The function of the membrane should therefore be weighed against the drying capabilities.
Rubber and cellular rubber in the lower part
A rubber sole can provide protection from moisture near the ground. Cellular rubber can also help with insulation. Check how the sole connects to the shaft and what maintenance is recommended for the different materials.
Gaiters can help keep snow out of the shaft opening. Choose a model that fits the volume of the ski boot and works with the pants and binding. Make sure straps and fasteners do not get in the way of the attachment.
Lacing, weight and handling with gloves
Ski boots that feel good inside the store also need to be easy to handle outside. Try opening, putting on, lacing and closing the shaft with the gloves you usually use.
- Lacing and locking: is it possible to give the midfoot a good grip without squeezing the ankle?
- Shaft and straps: can you adjust the support between easier walking and downhill skiing if the model is made for it?
- Weight: compare the same reference size and check if the number refers to one ski boot or one pair.
- Walking without skis: does the sole feel useful when you need to walk a short distance? Sole pattern is no guarantee of grip on bare ice.
- Spare parts: is it possible to get the right laces, inner boots or other wearing parts?
Light weight can be nice on long days. Weigh it against the insulation and support you need. A lightweight boot that requires you to brace your foot to maintain control is rarely a good fit.
How to try on ski touring boots
- Bring your system information. Model names and clear pictures of existing bindings will help determine the correct sole.
- Try both boots. Use the planned socks, liners and inserts.
- Lace up as you go. Distribute the pressure and adjust the shaft.
- Stand, walk and bend your knees. Feel for pressure, heel slippage and whether your toes reach the front.
- Try the ski step. Check that the ski boot bends comfortably without squeezing the upper part over the foot.
- Check for proper binding when possible. The binding should lock properly and nothing should need to be forced into place.
- Give it time to test. Keep the boots on for a while. Then do shorter test runs with the chosen equipment before a longer trip.
Distinguish between normal wear and the wrong fit. A material can soften, but a sole that is too short or a clear pinch around the forefoot does not make it a good buy because the model is recommended by someone else.
After the test ride, note: toe space, heel grip, heat, moisture, and how much power you need to control the ski. This provides a better basis for adjustment than just whether the boot felt “soft” or “hard.”
Dry, care for and check your ski boots
After the tour
Brush off snow and dirt. Remove removable insoles and liners according to the model's instructions. Open the ski boot and let the parts air dry gently. Avoid strong direct heat from radiators, stoves or fires.
Care for the right material
Use shoe and boot cleaners and impregnations recommended by the manufacturer. Leather, textile, membranes and cellular rubber may require different treatments. Do not apply leather grease to rubber parts or binding mechanisms as a general routine.
Grease and wax can change the softness and appearance of the leather, so follow the advice for your particular ski boot, especially if you want to maintain a clear support in the shaft.
Check before the next trip
Check seams, sole attachment, laces and the parts that lock into the binding. Clean and maintain the binding attachment according to the system's instructions. Replace worn parts in time and have unsafe damage assessed before a longer trip.
Store your ski boots in a dry and airy place between seasons. Check the liners, soles and laces to see if any of the replaceable parts need replacing.
Frequently asked questions about ski touring boots
Do NNN BC ski boots fit in regular NNN bindings?
No. NNN BC is a proprietary system for ski touring. It is not compatible with regular NNN, Prolink or Turnamic for cross-country skiing. Check the system on both the boot and binding.
Can I use Xplore boots in a BC binding?
An Xplore boot should be used in an Xplore binding. It will not fit in an NNN BC binding. The word BC is sometimes used generically for ski touring equipment, so check the full system designation.
Do all 75 mm ski boots fit all 75 mm bindings?
No. The shape and thickness of the toe cap and the requirements for three-pin or cable bindings may vary. Some boots can only be used with designated cable bindings. Follow the compatibility instructions for your boot and binding.
How much bigger should ski touring boots be?
There is no one size that fits all models. Measure your feet, follow the model's size guide, and try on the right socks and liner if necessary. You need to have toe room while keeping the heel and midfoot in place.
Will ski boots be warmer with two pairs of socks?
It may work in a construction with enough space, but more layers that make the ski boot cramped is not a good solution. Adapt the thickness of the socks to the ski boot and try the combination on a shorter trip.
When is a removable liner useful?
When you want to be able to air, dry or change the liner separately, for example on multi-day trips. Check that the liner fits the model and provides the right heel grip. A removable insole is not the same as a removable liner.
Is a stiffer ski touring boot always better?
No. More support can provide better control downhill, while a responsive stride may be more important on long, flat rides. Consider flexibility, torsional stiffness, and ankle support along with fit, skis, and bindings.
Can touring ski boots be used for cross-country skating?
Yes, if the skate binding is compatible with the specific ski boot system and the ski boot provides adequate support. Check the entire combination. A ski boot that is comfortable for the ski step is not automatically the best choice for skating.
