Sonds
An avalanche probe is a crucial piece of avalanche safety equipment and is used to accurately locate a person buried under snow after the avalanche beacon has guided you to the right area. When every second counts, the probe must be quick to assemble, easy to handle and stiff enough to penetrate both soft and hard packed snow.
With us you will find avalanche probes for all types of top tourers, off-piste skiers and mountain enthusiasts – from lightweight sports probes to robust professional versions for guides and rescue teams.
An avalanche probe makes it possible to:
✔ determine the exact position of the buried person
✔ measure the depth correctly before you start digging
✔ optimize digging efforts and save valuable time
✔ reduce the risk of incorrect digging in the wrong area
The right probe can be crucial to the outcome of an avalanche accident.
Avalanche probes vary in length, material and construction. Here are the most important things to consider:
Common lengths are 240 cm, 260 cm and 300 cm.
240 cm → enough for many trips
260–300 cm → recommended for deep snow and professional use
aluminum → strong, reliable and affordable
carbon fiber → ultralight and stiff, ideal for touring
Quick release buckles and pull handles allow you to have the probe ready in seconds.
Centimeter scale helps you assess depth and plan digging effectively.
Important for the probe to be able to penetrate hard-packed snow.
Anyone moving in potential avalanche terrain should always have a probe, along with:
✔ avalanche transmitter
✔ avalanche shovel
Applies to, among other things:
mountain tour / randonné
off-piste skiing
mountain tours
avalanche training
guides and mountain instructors
Without a probe, you cannot quickly locate a person under the snow.
The equipment is only effective if you know how to use it. We recommend:
✔ regular exercise at home or on the slopes
✔ repetition of search patterns
✔ practice together with your group
✔ avalanche knowledge course
We are happy to help you choose the right probe for your level and needs.
