The Sea To Summit Ether Light XR Pro Insulated Air Sleeping Mat - Large is a warm, thick and relatively lightweight sleeping mat for winter camping, cold mountain tours and alpine adventures. The combination of an ASTM-tested R-value of 7.4, ThermalCore insulation and 10 centimeter high Air Sprung Cells provides effective insulation and high sleeping comfort.
The Large version is 198 centimeters long and 64 centimeters wide. It is suitable for taller users and those who want more space around the shoulders without choosing the heavier, completely rectangular Large Rectangular model.
The R-value describes how well a sleeping pad prevents heat loss to the ground. Ether Light XR Pro has an R-value of 7.4, tested to the comparable ASTM F3340 standard. This makes the sleeping pad suitable for all-season use and temperatures well below freezing.
The R-value, however, is not an exact temperature limit. The actual sleeping comfort is also affected by the sleeping bag, clothing, ground temperature, wind protection, humidity and individual cold tolerance. On winter trips in exposed environments, an extra foam pad is a wise safety margin in case the inflatable pad is damaged.
ThermalCore insulation consists of three heat-reflecting TRM layers suspended within the base. The layers reflect back some of the body's heat radiation while limiting air movement between the warm top and the cold ground.
The material is softer and quieter than many traditional reflective films, although some noise may still occur when the outer fabric moves against the sleeping bag or tent floor.
According to Sea to Summit, the updated design is 25 percent lighter and packs into approximately half the volume compared to previous equivalent Ether Light models.
The sleeping pad uses Sea to Summit's Air Sprung Cell construction. Many interconnected air cells act like small springs and distribute the body's weight across the sleeping surface.
The 10-centimeter thick construction provides plenty of ground clearance and reduces the risk of shoulders and hips being pushed through. The firmness can be adjusted by filling or deflating air, making the mattress suitable for both back and side sleepers.
Large measures 198 × 64 centimeters and is recommended for people up to approximately 198 centimeters tall. The shape is tapered towards the foot end to reduce weight and pack volume.
The sleeping pad itself weighs approximately 720 grams. With the packing and pump bag, the packed weight is approximately 780 grams. The packed dimensions are approximately 24 × 12.5 × 12.5 centimeters.
Please note that Large is not the same model as Large Rectangular. The rectangular version has the same stated length and maximum width but weighs more and packs slightly larger.
The included stuff sack also functions as an Airstream pump bag. The pump bag connects to the valve and pushes in a large amount of air at a time, making inflation faster and reducing the amount of moisture from exhaled air that ends up inside the pad.
The XPRESS valve has separate functions for inflation, fine-tuning and fast deflation. When the ground is to be compacted, the valve can be fully opened to quickly release air from the cells.
The outer fabric is made of durable 30D/40D nylon with TPU lamination. The liquid extruded lamination creates an airtight bond between the nylon fabric and the TPU layer.
XR Pro also has higher weld strength than previous Ether Light generations. This increases the durability of the structure without making the ground unnecessarily heavy. However, always check the ground and remove sharp rocks, twigs and other things that could cause a puncture.
Sea to Summit states that their sleeping products have not been treated with PFAS or flame retardants.
The included PillowLock mounts can be attached to the sleeping pad and used with a compatible Sea to Summit Aeros pillow. The system reduces the risk of the pillow slipping out of place as you move around during the night.

Unroll the mat onto a clean surface and connect the pump opening of the packing bag to the XPRESS valve. Fill the pump bag with air and press the air into the mat. Repeat until the mat is firm and then adjust the pressure with the valve.
If possible, avoid inflating the mat directly with your mouth. The pump bag makes inflation easier and reduces the amount of condensation that collects inside the mat.
Wipe down the sleeping pad with warm water and mild soap. Rinse off any soap residue and allow the pad to air dry completely before packing away.
For longer storage, the base should be loosely folded with the valve open. This allows any moisture to leave the inside and reduces the strain on the valve and material. Store it dry and protected from strong heat, direct sunlight and sharp objects.
