Ortovox AVABAG Cartridge Carbon is a lightweight and compact high-pressure cartridge for avalanche backpacks with Ortovox mechanical AVABAG system. The carbon fiber construction keeps the weight down while the cartridge contains the gas required to inflate the backpack's avalanche airbag upon activation.
The cartridge is mounted and removed by screwing into the AVABAG system connection. It is only intended for compatible Ortovox AVABAG systems with mechanical activation and does not fit electric AVABAG LiTRIC backpacks.
The filled cartridge weighs approximately 350 grams and is significantly lighter than the equivalent traditional steel cartridges. The compact design takes up little space in the backpack and is therefore well suited for touring and freeriding where every gram counts.
The cartridge is filled with nitrogen gas under high pressure and is sufficient for one airbag deployment. After deployment, the cartridge should be returned to an authorized Ortovox dealer for replacement or refilling in accordance with local service regulations. Never attempt to fill or modify the cartridge yourself.

The cartridge is compatible with Ortovox avalanche backpacks that use the mechanical AVABAG gas cartridge system.
It is not compatible with:
Ortovox AVABAG LiTRIC
Electric airbag systems
ABS cartridges or ABS systems
Avalanche backpacks from other manufacturers
Always check the backpack model, instruction manual and cartridge connection before purchase and assembly.
Ortovox has issued a safety notice as some AVABAG Carbon cartridges may occasionally lose pressure. The cartridge weight must therefore be checked before each use.
Do this:
Check that the cartridge has not been activated or punctured.
Unscrew the aluminum protective cap.
Weigh the cartridge on a scale that displays whole grams.
Compare the weight with the control weight listed on the cartridge label.
The deviation may not exceed ±5 grams.
Do not use the cartridge if the weight deviates by more than 5 grams from the value on the label. Contact an authorized Ortovox dealer for inspection or replacement.
The general product weight does not replace this check. It is always the individual check weight on the cartridge label, without protective cap, that should be used.

As the cartridge contains pressurized gas, it is classified as dangerous goods. IATA regulations may allow transport with a compatible avalanche backpack, but airline approval is required and transport permission cannot be guaranteed.
Contact the airline before booking and ask for written approval. Regulations may vary between countries and airlines. According to Ortovox, filled cartridges are not permitted on flights to the USA or Canada. Carriers may also restrict express and air freight.
Always read and follow the instructions for use for both the cartridge and the AVABAG backpack. Check the weight of the cartridge, its installation and the function of the entire airbag system before each trip.
An avalanche airbag does not reduce avalanche risk and does not replace an avalanche transmitter, probe, shovel, training, or careful assessment of snow and avalanche conditions.
