The Ortovox 240 Alu Avalanche Probe is a lightweight and user-friendly avalanche probe for mountaineering, freeskiing and other activities in avalanche terrain. The fully assembled probe is 240 centimeters long and is used to locate a buried person after the approximate position has been determined with an avalanche transceiver.
The 7075 T6 aluminum construction provides a good combination of light weight, stability and durability. The probe weighs only about 200 grams and folds down to about 43 centimeters in length for easy storage in the backpack's security compartment.
The Quick Lock system allows the probe to be assembled and tensioned in seconds. When the folded segments are thrown out and the tension cord is pulled tight, the parts are brought together and locked into a stable probe.
The tension can be fine-tuned by turning the optimized adjustment screw. When the probe is to be packed up, the tension system is released and the segments can be folded back together.
The probe consists of six interconnected aluminum segments. The tubes have a diameter of 11 millimeters, which contributes to the low weight and compact package size.
The internal aramid tensioning system keeps the segments together during use. The large probe tip has a larger diameter than the tubes and is designed to improve penetration through hard and compact snow layers.
Easy-to-read markings along the probe show how deep a hit is. A clear marking at one meter depth and contrasting scales make the information quicker to read during a rescue operation.
The bottom segment is orange and acts as a visual indicator when the probe begins to approach the buried person. The depth information can then be used to plan the location and extent of the excavation.

Take out the probe, hold the tension line and throw out the segments so that they are aligned. Tighten the system until the segments lock together and check that all joints are fully connected before starting the probe.
The sounding should be done systematically from the lowest range reading or the last known position. When a hit has been confirmed, the probe is left as a marker. Read the burial depth and begin digging below the probe according to practiced rescue method.
Practice regularly retrieving, assembling and using the probe with gloves. In a real avalanche accident, quick and methodical handling is crucial.
An avalanche transceiver is only one part of the personal avalanche rescue equipment. Anyone traveling in avalanche terrain should carry a functioning avalanche transceiver, avalanche transceiver, and effective avalanche shovel, and be knowledgeable about how to use the equipment.
The equipment does not prevent avalanches and is not a substitute for avalanche training, terrain assessment, current avalanche forecasts, or careful trip planning. Check the probe before each trip and do not use it if segments, joints, tension lines, or locking mechanism are damaged.
Wipe the probe after use and allow all segments to dry completely before storing. Remove snow, ice and dirt from joints and locking systems without using oil or harsh chemicals.
Store the probe dry and protected from corrosion, impact and excessive heat. Mount and check it regularly to ensure that the locking and tensioning function correctly.
