The Altra Lone Peak 9+ Men's builds on one of Altra's most well-known trail running and hiking models, combining a roomy fit and low-to-the-ground feel with an upgraded outsole for better traction on varied terrain.
The most important addition in the Plus version is Vibram® Megagrip . The rubber compound is developed for grip and durability on rocky, wet and variable surfaces. This makes the shoe a good choice for Swedish mountain trails, wet roots, rocks, gravel roads and technical forest sections.
Underfoot, an updated Altra EGO™ midsole with moderate cushioning sits. The sole height is 25 mm under both the heel and forefoot, giving a 0 mm drop. The construction provides a stable and responsive platform with more ground contact than maximally cushioned trail shoes.
The fit is Altra's Original FootShape™ , the company's roomiest base fit. It provides extra room for the toes and more room through the forefoot and midfoot than many traditionally shaped running shoes.
The upper is made from 100 percent recycled RPET ripstop mesh with seamless reinforcements. The construction is designed to combine ventilation, light weight and durability for many miles on the trail.

Vibram Megagrip is the clearest difference between the Lone Peak 9+ and the regular Lone Peak 9.
The outsole is developed to provide grip and durability on, for example:
Wet stones
Dry rocks
Roots
Gravel
Hard-packed trails
Mountain terrain
Technical forest trails
Alternating substrate
Vibram Megagrip does not eliminate the risk of slipping, but provides better conditions for safe steps on wet and rocky surfaces than many simpler rubber compounds. Altra describes the sole as suitable for both wet and dry surfaces.
The Altra EGO™ midsole provides a balanced combination of cushioning, flexibility and ground contact.
With a 25 mm sole height you get:
Moderate shock absorption
Stable platform on uneven ground
Clearer sense of the ground
Flexibility when running and walking
Sufficient protection for longer distances
Less high and softer feel than maximally cushioned trail shoes
Altra describes the updated midsole foam as lighter and designed for comfort and ground contact.
Lone Peak 9+ has the same sole height under the heel and forefoot and thus 0 mm drop .
This creates a different load profile than shoes with a clearly raised heel. If you are used to a higher drop, you should introduce the shoe gradually.
A cautious approach could be to:
Start with walks and short, leisurely runs.
Wear Lone Peak with your regular shoes.
Increase the distance gradually.
Avoid starting with the longest or fastest workout of the week.
Reduce the load if your calves or hamstrings become unusually strained.
How long it takes to get used to it varies between different runners and is influenced by, among other things, previous shoes, running technique, foot strength and mobility.
Original FootShape™ is Altra's roomiest fit, providing extra room through the toe box and midfoot.
The fit is particularly suitable for those who:
Experiences regular running shoes as pointy
Needs more space for the toes
Has a wider forefoot
Want to give your foot room to swell during long runs
Prefers a less compressed feel
Using the shoe during long hiking days
Original FootShape is roomy, but does not automatically mean that the shoe will fit all wide feet. Heel width, foot volume and midfoot shape still affect the fit.
The color-specific standard model is stated to have a medium-wide heel, medium volume through the midfoot, and a wide toe box.
A thin and flexible TPU StoneGuard™ is embedded in the sole construction. It helps distribute pressure from sharp rocks and roots without making the shoe as stiff as a heavy hiking boot.
StoneGuard is well suited for:
Rocky mountain paths
Technical forest areas
Loose gravel
Roots
Rocky coastal trails
Long hikes with lighter packing
The protection is flexible and still provides a relatively natural feel to the surface.
The upper is made from 100 percent recycled RPET ripstop mesh . Seamless overlays reinforce vulnerable areas without creating unnecessary seams.
The ripstop construction helps to:
Increase wear resistance
Limit the spread of minor tears
Maintain ventilation
Keeping weight down
Provide support around the foot
The model is not waterproof. The mesh material lets water in during rain, stream crossings and wet terrain, but ventilates better than a shoe with a waterproof membrane.
The Lone Peak 9+ features Altra's GaiterTrap™ system , a Velcro-based attachment for compatible gaiters. The system allows for the use of gaiters without a strap under the outsole.
Gaiters can help keep away:
Gravel
Sand
Coniferous
Soil
Clay
Snow
Pebble
It is especially useful for mountain running, dry gravel trails, ultra-marathons and longer hikes.
Trail running
Mountain running
Technical forest trails
Long workouts

Hiking
Day trips
Thru-hiking
Gravel roads
Rocky trails
Running in wet and varied terrain
Runners who prefer 0 mm drop
Runners who need a spacious toe box
Altra states trail running, hiking and thru-hiking as the model's primary uses.

The main reason to choose the Lone Peak 9+ is the Vibram Megagrip outsole. The standard Lone Peak 9 uses Altra's MaxTrac rubber instead.
Breathable ripstop mesh
Lower weight
Normally dries faster
Suitable for milder and warmer conditions
No waterproof membrane construction
GORE-TEX Invisible Fit
Waterproof membrane
Higher weight
Suitable for rain, slush and colder conditions
Less ventilation
The regular Lone Peak 9+ is best suited when low weight, ventilation and faster drying are a priority. The GTX version is more suitable when you want to keep moisture out for longer.
To extend the life of your shoes:
Brush off loose mud and dirt after use.
Rinse gently with cool or lukewarm water.
Remove the insoles if the shoes are soaked.
Let the shoes air dry at room temperature.
Avoid radiators, drying cabinets and other strong direct heat.
Do not wash the shoes in a washing machine.
Store them dry and ventilated.
Check the upper, outsole and adhesive joints regularly.
Mud and fine gravel left in mesh and seams can accelerate wear.
The shoe has a 0 mm drop and may require gradual getting used to.
Original FootShape is roomy but does not automatically fit all foot shapes.
The standard variant has a normal men's width with a wide toe box.
The model is not waterproof.
Vibram Megagrip provides good grip but cannot eliminate the risk of slipping.
The weight varies between different sizes.
Please try the shoe on with the socks you plan to use.
Make sure there is enough space in front of your toes.
Altra Europe states approximately 327.4 grams per shoe. Weight varies depending on shoe size and reference size.
The Lone Peak 9+ has a 0 mm drop, which means that the heel and forefoot are placed at the same height.
The sole height is 25 mm under both the heel and forefoot.
The shoe has Vibram® Megagrip, developed for grip and durability on wet, dry, rocky and varied surfaces.

Yes. The model has a GaiterTrap™ attachment for compatible, strapless gaiters.
Measure your foot, add about 0.5 cm and compare to Altra's size chart. The need to go up a size depends on foot length, foot width, socks and how much room you want.
Altra recommends that you measure your foot and add approximately 0.5 cm before comparing the measurement to the size chart. If your feet are different lengths, use the longest foot.
Place a piece of paper on a hard floor next to a wall.
Place your heel lightly against the wall.
Wear the socks you plan to run or hike in.
Mark the longest toe.
Measure the distance from the wall to the mark.
Repeat with the other foot.
Start from the longest foot.
Add about 0.5 cm and compare with the table.
When trail running and hiking, it is important to have room in front of your toes, especially when running downhill and when your feet swell during long days.
