The OMM Ultra Shoe Blue/Orange is the shoe for those who prioritize comfort, reliability and durability during long trail runs. It is designed for runners who run longer – where cushioning, protection and a stable feel become more important the more hours you are out there.

The Ultra Shoe differs from the OMM Trail Shoe and OMM Fell Shoe in its more cushioned construction. OMM specifies a stack height of 30mm and a drop of 8mm , providing a more protective platform for longer distances.

The midsole is made of lightweight EVA and is designed to balance comfort, cushioning and energy return, making the shoe suitable for everything from long distance runs and mountain running to ultra-running, fastpacking and technical mixed terrain where the foot needs to stay together over time.

The two-layer upper construction is designed for long-distance comfort. A softer interior reduces irritation, while a more durable exterior provides structure and durability. Combined with the OMM X-Lace system, it creates a smooth and secure fit over the foot without unnecessary pressure points.

Underneath the shoe sits a Vibram® LiteBase outsole with MegaGrip and Traction Lugs . OMM describes the outsole as being engineered for grip, light weight and durability over mixed terrain.

For long distances

The OMM Ultra Shoe is built for runners who will be out for long periods of time. The increased cushioning and protective platform make the shoe especially relevant when the load builds up over time.

The shoe is suitable when you want:

More comfort than in a low and aggressive fell shoe

More protection than in a minimalist trail shoe

Stable feel on long runs

Good balance between cushioning and running feel

A shoe for many hours on mixed surfaces

OMM describes the Ultra Shoe as a shoe that will keep performing when it really needs to – with comfort, control and reliability deep into long efforts.

Cushioning and midsole

The Ultra Shoe has a lightweight EVA midsole and a stack height of 30mm . The higher platform provides more cushioning than OMM's more direct Trail and Fell models.

The midsole is designed to:

Absorb repeated stress

Reduce fatigue during longer workouts

Provide protection against harder surfaces

Maintain a responsive feel

Support an effective step over time

This makes the shoe particularly interesting for ultra running, longer mountain runs, long trail runs and training days where comfort must last from start to finish.

Upper for long-distance comfort

The upper's two-layer construction combines a softer interior with a more durable exterior. OMM describes the construction as designed to reduce friction and irritation, while maintaining structure and resilience over many miles.

This makes the shoe suitable for:

Long sessions where your feet swell

Ultra running

Mountain running

Mixed terrain

Multi-day adventure

Runners who want comfort without the shoe feeling loose

X-Lace system

The OMM X-Lace system distributes lace pressure evenly across the foot. The goal is to create stability and lockdown without localized pressure points. This is especially important during long workouts, where small pressure points can grow into larger problems over time.

For the best fit:

Lace the shoe evenly from the forefoot to the ankle.

Avoid pulling too hard over the forefoot.

Lock the heel without creating pressure over the instep.

Test the fit in uphill and downhill running.

Adjust after a few kilometers when your foot has warmed up.

Vibram® outsole

Underneath the shoe is a Vibram® LiteBase outsole with MegaGrip and Traction Lugs. OMM states that the outsole is designed for grip, light weight, durability and stability over mixed terrain.

Vibram® MegaGrip

The MegaGrip rubber is designed for reliable grip on both wet and dry surfaces. OMM describes it as a rubber compound that balances friction and durability on rocks, trails and mixed surfaces.

Vibram® LiteBase

LiteBase technology reduces outsole weight by reducing the thickness of the sole, while maintaining durability and grip. This is especially valuable on long distances where every gram counts over time.

Vibram® Traction Lug

The Traction Lug design increases the contact area with the ground and contributes to stability on loose, mixed and compact surfaces.

Terrain and area of use

the OMM Ultra Shoe is best suited for:

Gravel road

Packed path

Forest path

Mountain trail

Mixed trail

Easier technical terrain

Drier mountains and rocks

Long sessions where comfort is a priority

Independent testers describe the Ultra Shoe as a versatile long-distance shoe that performs well on gravel, dry trails, mixed terrain, and even shorter sections of road. The tester notes, however, that the 4mm studs make the shoe less suited to deep mud than a pure fell shoe.

For really wet, steep and muddy mountain or fell conditions, the OMM Fell Shoe is a more specialized choice.

Fit

The OMM Ultra Shoe is available in both Regular and Regular+ . This makes it easier to choose a fit based on foot width and intended use. The OMM product page shows both width options and sizes from UK 4 to UK 12.

Regular

Suitable for those who want a more standardized and secure trail fit.

Regular+

Suitable for those who want a little more space, especially on longer sessions where your feet can swell.

When running ultras and mountain running, it can often be wise to have a little more room than in a pure competition shoe, but the shoe should still sit stably in the heel and midfoot.

Care instructions

Brush away mud when the shoe has dried slightly.

Rinse with lukewarm water if necessary.

Do not use a washing machine.

Dry at room temperature.

Avoid radiators, drying cabinets and direct heat.

Remove the insole when drying.

Store the shoes in a dry and ventilated place.

Proper care extends the lifespan of both the upper, midsole and outsole.

Important to consider

The Ultra Shoe is designed for long-distance comfort, not as a pure mud specialist.

8mm drop may feel stable and familiar to many runners, but should be tested if you usually run in low-drop shoes.

Regular+ is a good option if you want more space on longer sessions.

Vibram MegaGrip provides good all-round grip, but deep mud often requires coarser studs.

Always test the shoes on a long run before a competition.

Weight may vary slightly between sizes.

The OMM Ultra Shoe is a unisex running shoe designed for long runs, ultras and long hours on varied terrain. The model is listed in UK sizes and is available in Regular and Regular+ width options.

Measure both feet and use the longest one. For ultra running, it is especially important that the shoe has enough room as the foot swells during long runs.

Regular is suitable for those who have a normal to narrow forefoot and want a close and secure fit.

Regular+ has the same length but about 1mm extra width and 3.5mm more circumference across the forefoot. This provides more volume and room for the toes, which can be especially valuable when feet swell during long runs.

If the length feels right but the shoe presses on the forefoot, you should choose Regular+ in the same size instead of automatically going up in length.

How is the OMM Ultra Shoe sized?

The model is generally perceived as normal in length. Start with your usual UK size, but always compare with foot length as EU conversions vary between shoe brands.

Choose the larger size if:

  • the foot length falls between two sizes
  • the longest toe is near the front edge of the shoe
  • you use thicker running socks
  • you plan long sessions where your feet swell
  • you feel your foot sliding forward and your toes hitting the front of the shoe on downhill slopes

Don't choose a larger size just to get more width. If the length is already right, Regular+ is a better option.

How to measure your foot

  1. Place a piece of paper on the floor with one edge against a straight wall.
  2. Put on the socks you intend to use with the shoes.
  3. Stand on the paper with your heel lightly against the wall and full weight on your foot.
  4. Mark in front of the longest toe.
  5. Measure from the edge of the paper to the mark.
  6. Repeat with the other foot and use the longest measurement.

To measure the width, mark the two widest points of the forefoot and measure the distance straight between them.

It's best to measure later in the day or after a walk, when your feet are slightly larger.

Check the fit

The correct size should:

  • give some space in front of the longest toe
  • allow the toes to move without pressure from the sides
  • allow for normal swelling during long sessions
  • keep the midfoot secure without hard pressure points
  • keep the heel stable without any obvious looseness
  • prevent the foot from sliding forward on downhill slopes
  • feel comfortable with the socks you use when running

The X-Lace system should keep the foot stable without having to be tightened too much. If the heel moves but the length feels correct, locking the heel with the laces can improve the fit.

If you fall between two sizes, we normally recommend the larger size for long runs and ultra running.
