The Altra Lone Peak 9+ Women's is a further development of the classic Lone Peak series and a good choice for trail runners, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts looking for a spacious shoe with clear contact with the ground.
The big difference between the Lone Peak 9+ and the regular Lone Peak 9 is the outsole. The Plus model is equipped with Vibram® Megagrip , a rubber developed for grip on both dry and wet surfaces. This makes the model particularly interesting for varied terrain, rocky trails, roots and mountain environments where the surface can change quickly.
The midsole is made of updated Altra EGO™ foam with moderate cushioning. The sole height is 25 mm in both the heel and forefoot, which gives 0 mm of drop . The construction places the heel and forefoot at the same level and provides a flatter, more ground-level running feel than many traditional running shoes.
The fit is Altra's Original FootShape™ , the company's most spacious toe box with extra room through the midfoot. The construction gives your toes room to move more freely and is especially great for runners who find conventional pointed-toe running shoes feel cramped across the forefoot.
The upper is made from 100 percent recycled RPET ripstop mesh and reinforced with seamless overlays. The material combination is designed to provide light weight, ventilation and durability for many miles on the trail.
The Black/Knockout Pink/White colorway combines a black base with distinct pink and white details. The color code model number is listed as AL0A85RH88I .

The Vibram Megagrip outsole is the main difference between the Lone Peak 9+ and the standard Lone Peak 9 model.
The rubber compound is designed to provide grip on varied surfaces, including:
Wet stones
Dry rocks
Roots
Hard-packed trails
Gravel
Mountain terrain
Mixed forest trails
The Lone Peak 9+ uses 3.5mm deep studs, which provides a combination of grip and a relatively compliant feel on harder trails.
The shoe is not a pure mud shoe with very aggressive studs. In deep mud or very loose ground, a shoe with longer and more sparse studs can provide better grip.
The updated Altra EGO™ midsole is lighter than before and designed to combine comfort with clear ground contact.
With a 25 mm sole height you get:
Sufficient cushioning for longer sessions
More ground contact than in maximally cushioned trail shoes
A stable platform on uneven ground
Relatively good flexibility
A balanced feel for running and walking
The Lone Peak 9+ is therefore suitable for runners who want a moderately cushioned trail shoe rather than a high and very soft model.
The shoe has the same height under the heel and forefoot, which gives 0 mm drop .
This means that the shoe is different from many traditional running shoes, which often have a raised heel. A flatter construction can give a different feeling of strain in the feet, calves and Achilles tendons.
If you are used to shoes with a higher drop, the transition should be gradual:
Start with shorter walks or leisurely runs.
Wear Lone Peak with your regular shoes.
Increase the distance gradually.
Avoid using the shoes directly on your longest or most demanding workout.
Reduce the load if you experience persistent discomfort.
Altra states that adaptation to Zero-to-Low Drop varies between individuals and that people with limited ankle mobility or previous hamstring problems may need a more careful transition.
The Lone Peak 9+ uses the Original FootShape™ , which is Altra's roomiest fit.
It provides:
Plenty of room for your toes
Roomier forefoot
More space through the midfoot
Possibility for the foot to swell during long sessions
More comfortable feel for many wider feet
Original FootShape does not automatically mean that the shoe will fit all wide feet. Heel, arch, foot volume and lacing still affect the fit. Altra also offers special Wide models for those who need even more room.
The upper is made from recycled RPET ripstop mesh and features seamless reinforcements over exposed areas. The construction is designed for durability without adding unnecessary weight.
The ripstop structure helps limit how quickly minor tears spread, while the mesh contributes to ventilation during warmer sessions.
This is not a waterproof model. For running in rain, wet snow or very wet terrain, there is the Lone Peak 9+ GTX with a waterproof GORE-TEX membrane.
The Lone Peak 9+ features StoneGuard™ protection to reduce the sensation of sharp rocks and bumps under the sole. The construction is flexible but provides extra protection in rocky terrain.
The protection fits well on:
Rocky mountain paths
Technical trail
Gravel and loose stones
Roots
Long hikes with light packing
The shoe is still more flexible than a heavy hiking boot and does not provide the same support or protection when carrying heavy loads and on very demanding terrain.
The model is compatible with Altra's GaiterTrap™ system. The attachment points allow the use of compatible gaiters without a strap under the shoe. The gaiters help keep gravel, sand, needles and snow out of the shoe.
It is particularly practical for:
Mountain running
Dry and gravelly paths
Snow
Clay
Ultratrail
Long hikes
Trail running
Mountain running
Long workouts
Ultra running
Hiking
Day trips
Thru-hiking
Forest trails
Rocky trails
Gravel roads
Runners who want a roomy toe box
Runners who prefer 0 mm drop
Hikers who want a lighter shoe than a boot
Altra lists trail running and hiking as the model's primary uses. Several current product versions also list thru-hiking.
Vibram® Megagrip outsole
More specialized grip on wet and technical surfaces
Slightly higher weight
Suitable for varied and demanding terrain
Altra MaxTrac™ outsole
Same basic fit and sole geometry
Slightly lower price and weight
Suitable for all-round trail running and drier surfaces
The models are otherwise very similar. The most important reason to choose the 9+ is the Vibram Megagrip outsole.
25 mm sole height
0 mm drop
Original FootShape™
Roomier toe box and midfoot
More down-to-earth feeling
Moderate attenuation
More cushioned and taller construction
Standard FootShape™
More enveloping midfoot
Suitable for runners who want extra comfort over longer distances
The Lone Peak is best suited when ground contact, flexibility and a roomy fit are a priority. The Timp is a better option when you want more cushioning and a slightly tighter feel through the midfoot.
Lower sole height
Lighter and more flexible
Clearer ground contact
Spacious Original FootShape™
Suitable for technical trails and hiking with lighter packs
Maximum dampened
Higher sole
More protection underfoot
Heavier construction
Suitable for long distances and runners who prioritize cushioning
Lone Peak is the more ground-level and agile model. Olympus is suitable when cushioning and protection are more important than low weight and ground feel.
Altra's European product page recommends going up a half to a full size , but fit is affected by foot length, foot width, socks, and how much extra room you want in front of your toes.
When choosing trail shoes, you should normally have a little more room than in everyday shoes because your feet can swell and slide forward when running downhill.
