The Exped Ultra 7R MW is a lightweight, warm and spacious sleeping pad for winter hiking, mountaineering, bikepacking and other adventures where low weight is required combined with effective insulation against ground cold. The R-value of 7.1 and the RDS-certified down insulation make the pad suitable for very cold conditions.

MW stands for Medium Wide. The sleeping pad is 183 centimeters long and 65 centimeters wide, which provides more sleeping space than the regular M model without increasing the length or packing volume as much as an LW version.

R-value 7.1 for very cold conditions

Ultra 7R has an R-value of 7.1 according to ASTM standards. This provides high insulation capacity and makes the model suitable for winter trips, overnight stays on snow and expeditions in sub-zero temperatures.

EXPED indicates a lower temperature of around −30 °C. The temperature specification is a guide and not a guaranteed comfort temperature. The actual sleeping comfort is also affected by sleeping bag, clothing, tent, ground conditions, weather and individual cold tolerance.

When used in winter, the entire sleeping system needs to be sized for the expected conditions.

Downmat Technology with 700 cuin down

EXPED's Downmat Technology™ uses down inside air chambers to limit heat loss through air circulation. The down has a fill power of 700 cuin and provides a lot of insulation in relation to weight and pack volume.

The down filling is certified according to the Responsible Down Standard, RDS. The standard sets requirements for animal welfare and traceability in the supply chain.

To protect the down from internal moisture, the sleeping pad should always be inflated with the included Schnozzel Pumpbag instead of by mouth.

Nine centimeters of sleeping comfort

The longitudinal air chambers create a nine-centimeter thick and comfortable sleeping surface. The height provides good separation from the ground and helps relieve pressure on the hips and shoulders, even when the tent site is uneven.

The outer air chambers are slightly higher than the central lying surface. The side channels provide extra support and help keep the body centered during the night.

The firmness can be adjusted by releasing a small amount of air when you lie on the mattress.

Medium Wide provides extra width

With dimensions of 183 × 65 centimeters, the MW version is suitable for those who want more space for shoulders and arms, but do not need the extra length of an LW model.

The rectangular shape uses the entire width from head to foot, providing a more spacious sleeping surface than a mummy-shaped sleeping pad and works well with both rectangular and mummy-shaped sleeping bags.

Lightweight construction for self-carried equipment

The Ultra series is designed for activities where equipment is carried or transported under one's own power. Despite its width, down insulation and thickness, the Ultra 7R MW weighs approximately 790 grams.

The outer material is made of recycled 20D ripstop polyester. The thin material keeps weight and pack volume down but requires more care than the heavier fabric of EXPED's Dura series.

The sleeping pad should always be used on a cleaned tent floor or together with a protective mat.

Schnozzel Pumpbag for moisture-free inflation

The included Schnozzel Pumpbag UL is filled with ambient air and connected to the mattress's valve. This makes inflation quick and reduces the amount of moisture entering the mattress.

This is especially important in sub-zero temperatures, as moisture from exhaled air can condense or freeze inside the base layer and eventually reduce the down's insulating properties. The pump sack can also be used as a stuff sack during the trip.

Use and care

Clear the tent site thoroughly of rocks, branches and other sharp objects. The thin 20D material should be protected with a tent floor or separate ground cover. Avoid dragging the sleeping pad across the ground.

Inflate the mattress with the Schnozzel Pumpbag. Avoid blowing with your mouth, as exhaled air adds moisture that can affect the down insulation. Do not fill the base unnecessarily hard, but adjust the firmness when you lie on it.

Clean with lukewarm water, mild detergent and a soft cloth or sponge. The valves should be completely closed during cleaning. Do not use bleach, washing machine or dryer.

Allow the mattress to air dry completely. Store it preferably unrolled with the vents open in a dry, cool place. Keep the mattress pad and the glue in the repair kit away from open flames and strong heat sources.
