It is created for trail running and light hiking where precision, flexibility and a natural stride are the focus. With zero drop, low stack height and Altra's signature fit, the Superior 7 provides a stable and natural feel - perfect for technical trails, gravel roads and fast tours in varied terrain.

Natural stride with zero drop

Like all Altra shoes, the Superior 7 has:

0 mm drop – heel and forefoot at the same height

natural foot position

efficient power transmission

This contributes to:

better balance

more natural stride

reduced strain on joints

Low profile – maximum trail feel

With a stack height of 21 mm and low damping, you get:

close contact with the substrate

quick response

good stability in technical terrain

The compression-molded EVA midsole provides just enough cushioning for protection – without taking away the ground feel.

Improved fit & flexibility

Altra Superior 7 has been updated with:

new tongue construction for easier entry

Ghillie lacing for even pressure distribution

increased flexibility in the sole

The result is a shoe that sits securely over the midfoot but provides plenty of room in the toe box , allowing the toes to move naturally even during longer sessions.

Grip you can trust – MaxTrac™

The updated MaxTrac™ outsole features:

improved pattern placement

increased grip on both dry and wet surfaces

good wear resistance

Perfect for:

forest paths

Gravel

technical terrain

Light weight – perfect for tempo & distance

The Altra Women's Superior 7 is generally regular in length but has a more body-hugging fit than roomier Altra models like the Lone Peak and Olympus. The model uses the Standard FootShape, which provides a foot-shaped toe box and a more secure grip around the midfoot.

Many users with high insteps or voluminous midfoot experience the shoe as tight across the foot. Therefore, measure both feet and take the volume of the foot into account when choosing a size.

How is the Altra Superior 7 Women sized?

The Superior 7 is generally perceived as being normal in length. Customer reviews at REI classify the model as normal in size, but several female users describe a tight fit across the midfoot and ankle.

Lab measurements also show that the Superior 7 is foot-shaped and slightly wider than the average trail shoe, but not as roomy as Altra's Original FootShape models. The space above the toes is also lower than average.

Experience

Foot-shaped but less spacious than Lone Peak and Olympus
Toebox height
Relatively low and close to the body

High ankle

Our size recommendation

First of all, choose your usual size in Altra women's shoes if you have normal or small foot volume and use thin running socks.

Choose a half size larger if:

  • you are between two sizes
  • the measurement is close to the upper limit of the size
  • you have a high ankle or voluminous metatarsal
  • you wear thicker socks
  • you want extra space for longer runs
  • the toes come close to the top or front edge of the shoe
  • you have previously had to go up a size in Altra trail shoes

Don't go down a size just to get a more precise race fit. The Superior 7 is already more body-hugging than the Lone Peak and Olympus.

If the shoe presses on the ankle

A half size larger may provide a little more volume, but extra length doesn't always relieve pressure over the midfoot. First try:

  1. Loosen the lacing securely over the bottom eyelets.
  2. Skip a lace intersection where the pressure is greatest.
  3. Check that the tongue is flat and centered.
  4. Tighten more around the ankle than over the forefoot.

If the length is correct but the shoe still presses on the ankle, the Lone Peak with Original FootShape may be a better option. Avoid choosing a Superior that is too long just to get more volume.

How to measure your feet

  1. Measure in the afternoon or evening when your feet are usually at their largest.
  2. Wear the socks you plan to wear with your shoes.
  3. Place a piece of paper on a hard floor next to a wall.
  4. Place your heel lightly against the wall and put normal weight on your foot.
  5. Mark where the longest toe ends.
  6. Measure the distance from the edge of the paper to the mark.
  7. Repeat with the other foot, starting from the longer one.
  8. Add 0.5 cm and compare the result with the table.

Check the fit

The heel and midfoot should be held stable without painful pressure. The toes should be able to move sideways and not be pressed against the upper or front edge of the shoe.

Try the shoes on an incline. Your foot shouldn't slide forward when running downhill, but the laces shouldn't have to be pulled so tight that they create pressure over your ankle.
