How is the Altra Superior 7 Men sized?

Part of the shoe
Perceived fit
Length
Normal

Metatarsal
Relatively tight and secure
Height above the foot
Something low and shallow
Heel
Normal to slightly relaxed
Foot volume
Best suited for low to normal foot volume

Most tests describe the length as normal, but user reviews vary from slightly large to slightly narrow. The difference seems to be mainly due to the shape and volume of the foot rather than the actual length of the shoe.

The Superior 7 doesn't have the same maximum wide toe box as the Altra Lone Peak, for example. It's still shaped for the foot and roomier than many traditional trail shoes, but it tapers slightly at the little toe. People with high insteps, wide midfoot, or very high foot volume may therefore find the shoe shallow.

Our size recommendation

First of all, choose your usual Altra size. Superior 7 is generally normal in length and should not automatically be purchased larger.

Consider a half US size larger if you:

  • is between two sizes
  • have a high ankle or high foot volume
  • has a very wide forefoot
  • want extra space for swollen feet during longer sessions
  • experiencing pressure on the top of the foot or at the little toe

Don't go up a size just because the shoe feels shallow. A larger size gives more length but not always enough extra volume. Adjusted lacing or a thinner insole may provide a better solution in some cases.

If you have narrow or low-volume feet, you should generally keep your regular size and adjust the lacing for better heel and midfoot grip. Avoid going down a size if it puts your toes too close to the forefoot.

If you are switching from another Altra model

Superior 7 has a Standard FootShape and feels more precise than models with an Original FootShape , such as Lone Peak. So don't choose a smaller size just because Superior feels less roomy - always check the length first.

Compared to previous Superior versions, some users find the Superior 7 to be closer to Altra's normal size, so it is not certain that a previous need to go up a size applies to this version.

How to measure your foot

  1. Place a piece of paper on a hard floor with one edge against a wall.
  2. Stand on the paper with your heel lightly against the wall.
  3. Mark where the longest toe ends.
  4. Measure both feet and start from the longest one.
  5. Add 0.5 cm and compare the result with the table.
  6. If you are between two sizes, you normally choose the larger size.

Try the shoe on with the socks you plan to wear. The heel and midfoot should be stable, while the toes should be able to move without touching the front edge. Check the fit both on flat ground and downhill.
