The Altra King MT 2 Men – Black is back – exactly as it should be. By popular demand, Altra has relaunched this iconic model, built for technical trails, steep climbs and demanding mountain terrain. This is the shoe for those who want maximum grip, low weight and direct ground contact when the surface is loose, rocky or muddy.

The shoe is equipped with Vibram® Litebase , which reduces the weight of the outsole, combined with Vibram® Megagrip for exceptional grip on both wet and dry surfaces. Aggressive lugs provide confidence on steep uphill and downhill slopes, while an integrated drainage system means the shoe quickly becomes light again after wet sections.

The Altra EGO™ midsole provides a responsive, down-to-earth ride, and the 0mm drop gives you a natural stride and optimal control. The StoneGuard™ insert protects your feet from sharp rocks and debris, while the GaiterTrap™ makes it easy to attach gaiters – no straps required.

With Altra's classic FootShape™ fit, you get a roomy toe box that lets your toes work naturally, combined with a secure midfoot. Whether you're climbing uphill, flying downhill, or tackling technical terrain, the King MT 2 lives up to its name .

The Altra Men's King MT 2 has a more body-hugging, precise fit than roomier Altra models like the Lone Peak and Olympus. It uses the Standard FootShape, which provides room for the toes but a more secure grip around the midfoot.

Several users experience the King MT 2 as short or small in size. Therefore, measure both feet and compare the measurements of the longer foot with the table before ordering.

How is the Altra King MT 2 sized?

The King MT 2 has a tighter, more race-oriented fit than many other Altra shoes. The toe box is still foot-shaped, but the Standard FootShape isn't as roomy as the Original FootShape in the Lone Peak and Olympus.

User perceptions of sizing vary. Some wear the same size as other Altra models, while many find the King MT 2 to be a half to a full size smaller. In a compilation of 141 customer reviews, 38 percent said the shoe felt a full size smaller.

Our size recommendation

If you are unsure, choose a half US size larger than your usual Altra size, especially if you are coming from Lone Peak, Olympus or another model with Original FootShape.

Choose a half size larger if:

  • you are between two sizes
  • your measurement is close to the upper limit of the size
  • you have a wide or voluminous metatarsal
  • you wear thicker socks
  • your usual Altra size usually fits relatively tight
  • you want extra space when your feet swell
  • toes come close to the leading edge in downhill running

Your regular Altra size may work if:

  • the foot measurement is clearly below the size comparison measurement
  • you have narrow or low-volume feet
  • you wear thin socks
  • you want a precise fit for shorter races and technical terrain
  • you have already tried the King MT 2 in the same size

Some users may need to go up a full size, but only if the regular size is clearly too short or is too tight around the foot. Too much extra length can impair precision in technical terrain.

So don't automatically choose the same size as in Lone Peak or Olympus without first checking the foot length.

How to measure your feet

  1. Measure in the afternoon or evening when your feet are usually at their largest.
  2. Wear the socks you plan to wear with your shoes.
  3. Place a piece of paper on a hard floor next to a wall.
  4. Place your heel lightly against the wall and put normal weight on your foot.
  5. Mark where the longest toe ends.
  6. Measure the distance from the edge of the paper to the mark.
  7. Repeat with the other foot, starting from the longer one.
  8. Add 0.5 cm and compare the result with the table.

Check the fit

The heel and midfoot should be very stable, but the strap should not create uncomfortable pressure over the foot. The toes should be able to move and should not hit the front edge of the shoe.

Try the shoes on an incline. The King MT 2 is designed for steep and technical terrain, which makes it especially important that your foot does not slide forward or sideways. First adjust the laces and then the midfoot strap.
