The Ortovox Free Rider 26 S is a body-hugging freeride backpack with a shorter back system. The model is designed for people with a back length of approximately 36–44 cm and is suitable for both women and men who need a more compact fit.

The 26-liter volume provides space for avalanche equipment, reinforcements, food, fluids, crampons and crampons. The CLASP back system and elastic hip belt keep the pack close to the body for stability and freedom of movement while skiing.

Short back system for shorter users

The S model has a noticeably shorter back system than Ortovox backpacks with a Regular fit. The shoulder straps are shorter, narrower and have a more pronounced S-shape. The hip belt fins are also shorter and conically shaped to fit a smaller body.

The design can provide better weight distribution and stability for people who find that regular ski backpacks are too long on the back. S denotes the back length and is not limited to a particular gender.

Body-hugging CLASP system

The flat and elastic CLASP FLEX BELT hip belt follows your body's movements and helps keep the pack stable on technical terrain. Soft back pads mold to your back without restricting the spine's natural movement.

Integrated compression straps allow the pack to be pulled closer to the body, reducing movement of the contents and providing a compact profile even when the backpack is not fully filled.

Prepared for CLASP Spine Protector

On the inside there is a separate compartment for the Ortovox CLASP Spine Protector. The optional back protector simply slides into the compartment and makes it possible to combine backpack and back protector without a separate protective vest.

CLASP Spine Protector is sold separately and is not included with the backpack.

Separate security compartment

Shovels, probes and other emergency equipment are stored in a separate security compartment with special holders. The equipment is kept separate from other packing and can be quickly retrieved if an accident occurs.

The main compartment can be opened from both the front and the back panel. The back access makes it possible to reach the pack even when skis or snowboards are mounted on the outside.

Flexible mounts for winter equipment

The Ortovox Free Rider 26 S has both diagonal and side-mounted ski mounts. A snowboard or snowshoe can be attached to the side, while two ice axes, ski or hiking poles and ropes have their own attachment points.

A helmet net is integrated into the backpack. The model is also compatible with hydration systems and has a valuables compartment with key clip, signal whistle on the chest strap and Ortovox Emergency Card.

Fit and back length

The Ortovox Free Rider 26 S has a Short back system and is recommended for a measured back length of approximately 36–44 cm. The back length is measured from the top of the hip bone up to the seventh cervical vertebra.

Try and adjust the backpack with the outerwear and pack you normally wear. The hip belt should wrap around your hips and carry some of the weight, while the shoulder straps should follow your torso without chafing or leaving large gaps.

Important safety information

The Ortovox Free Rider 26 S is not an avalanche airbag backpack. CLASP Spine Protector, avalanche equipment, helmet and hydration system are sold separately.

When traveling in avalanche terrain, each person must wear an avalanche transceiver on their body and have their own shovel and probe. The equipment does not replace avalanche knowledge, current avalanche forecasts, careful route selection, or regular rescue training.

Care instructions

Empty all compartments after use and brush off snow and dirt. Clean the backpack by hand with lukewarm water, a soft cloth and, if necessary, a mild detergent. Do not machine wash or tumble dry the backpack.

Allow it to air dry completely with the compartments open, away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources. Regularly check straps, buckles, zippers and equipment attachments.
