The Ortovox Shovel Pro Guide is an efficient and versatile avalanche shovel for longer mountain tours, freeride and professional use in snow. The combination of low pack volume, telescopic handle and a stable 640 cm² blade provides high capacity without the shovel becoming unnecessarily heavy.
The shovel weighs approximately 630 grams and has a maximum working length of 85 centimeters. It is constructed of hardened and anodized aluminum and certified according to the UIAA 156 avalanche shovel standard.
The large blade has high side edges and reinforcing stability ribs that help hold the snow in place with every stroke. The sharp and stable leading edge can work its way through hard-packed snow and compact avalanches.
The blade can also be mounted in a 90-degree clearing position. This allows snow to be pulled away with a pick-like motion, which is useful for strategic digging and when large amounts of snow need to be moved quickly.
The oval shaft provides a torsionally rigid construction and makes it easy to feel how the parts should be assembled. An integrated guide and quick release help you quickly join the shaft to the blade.
The T-handle sits firmly in the hand and can be adapted for both right- and left-handed users. The shaft can be extended to a working length of 85 centimeters and collapsed to approximately 43 centimeters for transport.
In addition to avalanche rescue, the shovel's flat and sharp blade can be used for snow profiling, stability testing, bivouac and igloo construction. The design also has a rescue sled function and can be included as a component when an emergency sled needs to be built with compatible equipment.

An avalanche shovel should always be part of a complete avalanche equipment set, along with an avalanche transceiver and probe. The equipment does not replace knowledge of avalanches, risk assessment or regular training in buddy rescue. Check the shovel's parts before each trip and practice assembling and using it with gloves.
