The Cocoon Ripstop Silk Expedition is an ultra-light and highly compact sleeping bag liner for expeditions, mountaineering, hiking and travel where every gram counts. The mummy-shaped construction is made from 100 percent ripstop silk and comes in three sizes to reduce the amount of excess material.
Depending on size, the liner weighs only 110–130 grams and packs down to approximately 13 × 6 centimeters. It can be used inside the sleeping bag for increased comfort and better hygiene or as a thin travel sheet in cabins, hostels and in warm climates.
Ripstop silk has a checkered pattern of stronger silk threads woven into the material. The construction makes the fabric more durable and resistant to tearing than regular silk, while maintaining its soft feel against the skin.
Silk regulates the sleeping climate by feeling cool in hot weather and pleasantly warm when the temperature drops. The material is also very light, breathes effectively and dries quickly after washing or damp nights.
The Expedition Liner is available in three body-fitting sizes. The slim mummy shape and specially shaped foot section reduce the amount of fabric and thus both weight and pack volume.
Cocoon recommends adding approximately 35 centimeters to your body length to choose the appropriate liner length. This allows room for the head, feet and hood closure without creating unnecessary loose fabric.
The hood has an elastic drawstring that can be tightened around the head. In cold conditions, the opening can be reduced to leave only a small part of the face exposed, helping to limit heat loss.
The liner has no zipper. The closed construction keeps weight down and reduces the number of parts that can break, but means you get in and out of it through the top opening.
The included stuff sack is made of double-sided siliconized ripstop nylon and is sewn onto the inside of the liner at chest height. When the liner is in use, the sack can act as a small pocket for, for example, a headlamp, watch or other small items that you want to have close at hand during the night.
Because the packing bag is integrated, it cannot be dropped off separately. When the liner is packed, it is turned inside the bag and compressed to a very small size.
According to Cocoon, Ripstop Silk Expedition can increase the thermal insulation of the sleeping system by up to approximately 5.3 °C. This is a laboratory-based guideline and should not be interpreted as a new temperature rating for the sleeping bag.
The actual heat gain is affected by factors such as the fit of the sleeping bag, clothing, sleeping pad, humidity and individual cold tolerance. The liner should therefore be used as a complement and not as a replacement for a sleeping bag adapted to the expected temperature.

Place the liner inside the sleeping bag with the shaped foot end at the bottom. The loops at the head and foot end can be used to stabilize the liner in a compatible sleeping bag. Crawl down through the opening and adjust the hood to suit the temperature and desired ventilation.
After use, the liner should be aired and dried before packing away. Using a liner reduces the amount of sweat, skin oil and dirt that reaches the sleeping bag's inner fabric, which can reduce the need to wash the entire sleeping bag.
Hand wash or machine wash the liner at 30°C on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. It is recommended to use a laundry bag and wash it separately from garments with zippers or Velcro, which can damage the thin silk fabric.
Do not use fabric softener or bleach. Allow the liner to air dry and avoid high heat. The loops at the head and foot end can be used when hanging to dry. Always check the product's care label before cleaning.
