Hestra Army Leather Expedition Mitt is Hestra's warmest mitten , developed for expeditions, high alpine climbing and long days in extreme cold and harsh winter weather . It is designed for professional users and enthusiasts who demand maximum warmth, durability and reliability in the most demanding environments.

The outer glove combines durable and breathable polyamide softshell with Army Leather goatskin , while the palm is reinforced with kangaroo leather for superior grip and extreme durability against ropes, ice axes and equipment.

One of the glove's greatest strengths is its two removable inner liners , which provide both exceptional warmth and great flexibility:

A fleece thumb lining with G-Loft synthetic insulation that effectively insulates and wicks away moisture

A 3-finger lining in ripstop polyamide with Primaloft® Gold , which can also be used separately as a lightweight thermal glove in a tent or base camp

The removable liners make the glove easier to dry and wash , which is crucial during longer expeditions.

The long collar with drawstring keeps snow and cold out, and both collar and wrist are easily adjusted with one hand . The included Hestra handcuffs (wrist strap) reduce the risk of losing the glove in exposed terrain. The carabiner and eyelet provide multiple attachment options to a harness or backpack.

Hestra Army Leather Expedition Mitt is an extra spacious expedition mitten with two removable linings. The model is only sold in sizes 7, 9 and 11. If your usual Hestra size is an even number, choose the next larger size.

The measurements are for guidance only. Measure both hands and start with the larger hand.

How to measure your hand

Hand circumference: Measure around the widest part of the hand, just below the knuckles and without including the thumb.

Hand length: Measure from the crease of the wrist to the tip of the middle finger.

Use a soft measuring tape and keep your hand relaxed. The measuring tape should lie flat against your hand without being tight.

How should Expedition Mitt fit?

Always try the mitten on with both included liners in place. The model has a fleece liner with G-Loft around the thumb and a separate three-finger liner with PrimaLoft Gold. This makes it significantly stronger and roomier than a regular ski mitten.

The fit should allow some air around the hand and room to move the fingers. This helps the insulation retain heat. The fingertips should not press against the outer mitten and the fit should not restrict blood circulation.

At the same time, the mitten should be stable enough not to rotate around the hand or slip off when using poles, ropes or other equipment.

If you are between two sizes

Normally, choose the larger size. This is especially important for an expedition mitten, as a too-tight fit compresses the insulation and can impair circulation.

However, the size does not need to be oversized beyond the table's recommendation:

• If you normally use Hestra 8, choose size 9.
• If you normally use Hestra 10, choose size 11.
• If you are normally a size 7 or 9, choose the corresponding size.

If size 7 still feels clearly too big, the model is probably not suitable for your hand.

Check the fit

The right size means that:

• the fingertips do not press against the outer glove
• you can move your fingers inside the lining
• the insulation is not pinched over the knuckles or palm
• The mitten sits securely when the wrist strap is tightened.
• the long collar can be pulled over the jacket sleeve
• both linings lie flat without creasing

Lining and extra layers

The two removable liners are part of the model's heating system and should be used during size testing. The inner three-finger liner can also be used separately as a camp glove.

An extra thick inner liner is not recommended if it makes the mitten too tight. Limited space and reduced circulation can make the hand colder despite more insulation. A replacement liner should be the same size as the outer mitten.

Is the mitten waterproof?

The Army Leather Expedition Mitt is built for extreme cold and has a durable outer layer, but Hestra does not classify the model as waterproof. The leather should be treated regularly with a suitable leather conditioner and the linings should be removed and dried after use.
