The VJ Ultra 3 is a technical trail shoe designed for long distances, ultra running and demanding terrain. It is built for runners who want plenty of cushioning, reliable grip and protection for many hours on trails, mountains, forests, gravel, roots and rocks.

The midsole is made of VJ SuperFOAMance , a modern and lightweight foam material that provides soft cushioning, responsiveness and comfort even during longer sessions. With a stack height of 38 mm in the heel and 30 mm in the forefoot, you get a protective platform that reduces the load from hard and uneven surfaces.

Between the midsole and outsole is a full-length rock plate that protects the foot from sharp rocks, roots and technical sections. This makes the shoe especially suitable for trail running in tougher terrain where the surface varies quickly and the feet need protection for a long time.

The outsole is equipped with VJ's well-known Superior Contact rubber , a butyl rubber compound with very good grip on both wet and dry surfaces. The 4.5 mm deep studs provide secure grip on trails, mountains, mud, gravel and technical sections without the shoe feeling too aggressive for longer distances.

The multizone engineered mesh upper is lightweight, breathable and designed to provide comfort for miles. The VJ Fit Scale 4 fit provides a slightly roomier feel than the slimmer VJ models, while keeping the foot firmly in place for technical running.

The VJ Ultra 3 is an excellent choice for those looking for a maximum cushioned trail shoe with plenty of grip, good protection and comfort for ultra races, long runs, mountain running and technical adventures.

The VJ table corresponds to a race-like fit with only a few millimeters of extra space in front of the toes. Choose the next size up if you want more space or use the shoes for long sessions.

What is the size of the VJ Ultra 3?

VJ states that the Ultra 3 is true to size and recommends that you choose your usual running shoe size. The model has a width of 4 out of 5 on the VJ fit scale, which is on the roomier side.

The forefoot offers plenty of room while the Fitlock system wraps around the arch and helps keep the midfoot stable. The soft heel construction features a grippy material that prevents the heel from slipping.

User size perception

Users generally describe the Ultra 3 as comfortable and roomy without feeling unstable. One runner with a large, wide foot found the model to provide good space and support, while another stated that the sizing was true to Asics and that about an extra centimeter of space beyond the foot length provided a good fit.

The experience supports the recommendation to choose the regular size for a closer fit and the next size up if you want more toe room for long distances.

Our size recommendation

  • Choose your usual running shoe size if you want a close and stable fit.
  • If you are between two sizes, you should choose the larger one.
  • For ultra running and long workouts, we recommend about 0.5–1 cm of space in front of the longest toe.
  • Choose the next size up if your foot measurement is close to the upper limit of the table or if your feet tend to swell.
  • If you have wide feet, the Ultra 3 is one of VJ's roomier models.
  • If you have narrow feet, you should check that the heel and midfoot are stable enough.
  • Use the foot length in centimeters as a primary measure, as EU sizes may differ between brands.

How to measure your foot

  1. Place a piece of paper on the floor with one edge against a wall.
  2. Put on the socks you plan to run in.
  3. Place your heel against the wall and put your entire body weight on the foot.
  4. Mark in front of the longest toe.
  5. Measure the distance from the wall to the mark.
  6. Repeat with the other foot, starting from the longest measurement.
  7. Compare the measurement with the table and choose the larger size if you are between two sizes.

Check the fit

When the shoe is laced, the heel should sit firmly and the midfoot should feel fixed without any uncomfortable pressure over the arch. The toes should be able to move freely and should not hit the front edge of the shoe when you run downhill.

Try the shoes on later in the day, when your feet are usually a little bigger. Use the same type of socks you plan to wear during training and competition.
