The Altra M Vanish Carbon 3 is a lightweight and responsive race shoe for fast workouts and road races. The combination of a two-piece supercritical PEBA foam midsole, a split carbon fiber plate, and a pronounced rocker shape creates an efficient running feel with a quick transition through the stride.

The model has 40 mm of cushioning under the heel, 36 mm under the forefoot and thus 4 mm drop. Racing FootShape™ provides a race-oriented fit with stable grip around the heel and midfoot while giving the toes room to work during push-off.

FAST RCE PEBA midsole

The new FAST RCE midsole consists of two layers of supercritical PEBA foam. The material is developed for low weight, high responsiveness and an efficient feel at higher speeds.

The high sole profile provides plenty of cushioning for hard surfaces, while the construction is geared towards speed rather than traditional volume training.

Split carbon fiber plate for a powerful push-off

The midsole features a patent-pending carbon fiber plate that is split at the forefoot. The design combines the rigidity of the plate with the ability for the big toe to work more actively during push-off.

Together with the shoe's reinforced rocker, the plate contributes to a quick and smooth transition from landing to toe-off.

Competition top with low weight

The seamless upper is made of lightweight, breathable engineered mesh. A thin, soft tongue reduces unnecessary bulk, while the lace-up construction helps keep your midfoot in place as the pace picks up.

The outsole has strategically placed rubber for grip and durability on asphalt without burdening the shoe with more material than necessary.

The Altra M Vanish Carbon 3 features Racing FootShape™, Altra's race-oriented fit. It sits closer around the heel and midfoot than the brand's roomier Original and Standard models, while maintaining functional space for the toes.

Unlike many classic Altra shoes, the Vanish Carbon 3 is not a zero-drop model. The difference between the heel and forefoot is 4mm. Runners who are used to completely flat shoes should therefore pay attention to the changed geometry.

The Altra M Vanish Carbon 3 is a carbon fiber reinforced racing shoe with a rounded, foot-shaped toe box. The model gives the toes more room than many traditional racing shoes while providing a snug and stable fit in the heel and midfoot.

The chart follows Altra's official size conversion. The CM value refers to the measurement to be compared to the chart, not the inside length of the shoe.

How to measure your foot

1. Place a piece of paper on a hard floor with one edge against a wall.
2. Put on the running socks you intend to use.
3. Place your heel lightly against the wall and put weight on your foot.
4. Mark in front of the longest toe.
5. Measure both feet and start from the longest one.
6. Add 0.5 cm to your measured foot length and choose the closest measurement in the table.

Example: If your longest foot measures 27.5 cm, add 0.5 cm and match the measurement to 28 cm. This corresponds to EU 44.

How do the Altra Vanish Carbon 3 fit?

The Vanish Carbon 3 has a rounded toe box that allows your toes to spread naturally. The heel and midfoot are more wraparound to keep your foot in place as the pace increases.

The shoe should therefore feel:

• stable around the heel and midfoot
• roomy, but not loose, in front of the toes
• free from pressure on the big toe and outer toes
• safe without the foot slipping in curves or when pushing off

Don't choose a smaller size just to get a typically tight racing feel. Your toes should be able to move without hitting the front edge of the shoe.

If you are between two sizes

First of all, choose the larger size if you run longer distances, tend to have swollen feet, or want to use slightly thicker socks.

The smaller size may be better if the larger one provides obvious play at the heel or allows the foot to slide forward – provided the toes still have enough room.

If the length feels right but the shoe presses on the toe joints, the problem is likely the fit or width, not the length. Going up several sizes may result in poorer heel grip.

Check the fit

Try on the shoes later in the day when your feet are at their largest. Lace them up as you would before running and check that:

• your toes don't reach the front edge when you stand or jog
• toe box allows natural toe splay
• the heel remains in place without lifting
• The midfoot feels secured without pressure or numbness
• the foot does not slide forward when braking

If you already have another Altra model, the same size can be a good starting point, but try it on carefully. A race shoe like the Vanish Carbon 3 should hold the foot more securely than Altra's roomier trail and mass training shoes.
