Montane Trail Gaiters are lightweight and durable ankle gaiters for trail running, mountain running and fastpacking. They fit snugly around the shoe and ankle to prevent gravel, sand, needles and other debris from entering the shoes.

The supple Raptor Flex material has four-way stretch for full freedom of movement, while reinforced sections over the inside of the foot protect in particularly exposed areas. Weighing around 50 grams per pair, the gaiters take up minimal space in your running vest or backpack.

Protects shoes from gravel and debris

Trail Gaiters cover the opening between the shoe and the ankle, where pebbles and other loose material can easily get in. This reduces the need to stop and empty your shoes during your run and can also protect socks and ankles from easier contact with vegetation.

The gaiters are particularly suitable for gravel trails, dry mountain trails, sandy areas and other surfaces with a lot of loose material.

Raptor Flex with four-way stretch

The main material is made of durable nylon with elastane and follows the movements of the ankle without feeling restrictive. The body-hugging construction reduces the risk of the gaiters getting caught on branches or vegetation.

The material has a fluorocarbon-free, water-repellent DWR treatment that helps light moisture and dirt to bead off. The gaiters are water-repellent but not completely waterproof.

Secure and adjustable attachment

A hook at the front attaches to the shoe's laces, while the elastic heel with grip surface helps keep the gaiter in place. The adjustable strap runs under the shoe and can be adjusted to fit different types of trail and hiking shoes.

The underfoot strap is replaceable as it is a wear part. Extra straps are included, which extends the practical life of the gaiters.

Regularly check the straps under the shoes and replace them when they become worn.

Montane Trail Gaiters are low and elastic gaiters for trail running and fastpacking. The size is chosen according to the shoe size, but the width and volume of the shoe also affects how the gaiter fits.

Size chart

Size
EU shoe size
UK shoe size
S
37–40.5
4.5–7
M
40.5–42.5
7–9
L
42.5–46.5
9–12

The sizes overlap at EU 40.5 and EU 42.5. You should also take into account the width and construction of the shoe.

If you are between two sizes

Typically, choose the smaller size if you have a narrow or low-cut trail shoe and want a close fit.

Choose the larger size if you have:

  • a Wide model
  • a high or heavily cushioned shoe
  • wide outsole
  • large volume over the midfoot
  • strong heel
  • a shoe that is right at the upper end of the size range

Example:

  • EU 40.5 with a narrow, low trail shoe – try S first.
  • EU 40.5 with a wide or voluminous shoe – choose M first.
  • EU 42.5 with a low standard model – M may fit best.
  • EU 42.5 with a wide or high-built shoe – choose L first.

How Montane Trail Gaiters should fit

The gaiter should fit snugly around the ankle and the upper part of the shoe without tightening or restricting the movement of the ankle.

The right fit means that:

  • the gaiter covers the opening around the shoe
  • no large gaps form at the heel or sides
  • the front hook reaches the shoelaces without stretching the material too much
  • the heel part sits securely
  • the strap under the foot can be adjusted correctly
  • the gaiter does not pull down when you bend your ankle
  • the material does not press over the Achilles tendon
  • you can walk and run without hindrance

Try the gaiter on the shoe

The size should always be assessed together with the shoes the gaiters will be used on:

  1. Put on the shoe and tie it as usual.
  2. Pull the gaiter over the ankle and the opening of the shoe.
  3. Attach the hook to the shoelace at the front.
  4. Place the strap under the shoe.
  5. Adjust the strap so that the gaiter sits securely without being tightened unnecessarily.
  6. Check that the elastic heel grip is positioned correctly.
  7. Bend your ankle and walk a few steps.

If possible, the strap should be placed in a protected area between the sole studs so that it is not exposed to unnecessary wear and tear on the ground.

Important about the shoe model

Two shoes in the same EU size can have very different outer dimensions. A low and narrow racing shoe takes up less space than a wide, maximum cushioned trail shoe.

Therefore, don't just choose based on the number on the shoe box. Also check that the gaiter reaches around the entire shoe and that the strap can be adjusted without the material being overstretched.

Check the correct Montane model

This table applies to Montane Trail Gaiters , which are available in sizes S, M and L.

It should not be confused with the Montane Trail Lite Gaiters , which use the combined sizes S/M and M/L and have different size ranges.
